Gracias a una alianza con la compañía de ingeniería de materiales BIONIC®, Nicoya Peninsula WATERKEEPER construyó un centro de acopio en Cóbano para el procesamiento de plástico. BIONIC® transforma el plástico en polímeros de alta calidad para ser utilizados en una amplia gama de aplicaciones que incluyen equipaje, pantalonetas, vestidos de baño, zapatos, muebles, vestidos y trajes. BIONIC® dio los fondos y Vivero Lacon cedió el uso de un terreno para que WATERKEEPER construya y opere el centro.
Empezando el lunes 21 de enero de 2019, tendremos rutas de recolección semanales en Santa Teresa, Mal País, Playa Carmen, Hermosa, San Isidro, Cóbano y comunidades vecinas. Recolectamos plástico, aluminio, hojalata, vidrio, tetrapack y plástico de playa. Seguí nuestras páginas de Facebook e Instagram para más detalles del día de recolección en tu comunidad. Contactanos para ser parte de este creciente grupo y darte más información de cómo clasificar tus reciclables y los beneficios de unirte a esta iniciativa. Asegurate que tu reciclaje esté LIMPIO y SEPARADO en bolsas transparentes. Estamos haciendo unas bolsas reutilizables que pronto distribuiremos para generar menos basura.
En este centro también podremos procesar plásticos de playa que normalmente no tienen la calidad para ser reciclados por haber estado en agua de mar y bajo el sol. Esto quiere decir que también recibimos micro plástico y mucha de la basura que se recoge durante las limpiezas de playa. Esto es una excelente noticia porque la cantidad de plástico que llega a las playas crece constantemente.
Debemos tomar responsabilidad de la basura que generamos y la forma en que la desechamos. Ahora que ya tenemos la infraestructura para reciclar, confiamos que la población va a aprovechar esta oportunidad y limpiar este lugar tan lindo y llegar a ser un ejemplo a nivel nacional y mundial.
Como ustedes saben, WATERKEEPER es una asociación sin fines de lucro, así que, si después de cubrir los costos de las operaciones hay fondos excedentes, estos se invierten en iniciativas para ¡mantener el agua LIMPIA!

Recycling time!
Thanks to an alliance with material engineering company BIONIC®, Nicoya Peninsula WATERKEEPER built this amazing marine and coastal plastic processing center in Cóbano. BIONIC® transforms plastic into high quality polymers for a wide range of applications including luggage, boardshorts, swimsuits, footwear, furniture, evening gowns, and suits. BIONIC® provided the funding and Vivero Lacon provided the land so that Waterkeeper would operate the center.
Starting Monday January 21st, 2019 we will run weekly collection routes in Santa Teresa, Mal País, Carmen, Hermosa, Cóbano and neighboring communities collecting plastic, aluminum and tin cans, glass, tetrapack, and beach plastic. Follow our Facebook and Instagram pages for more info on the collection day for your community. Contact us to be part of this growing movement and so we can provide you with more information on how to sort your recyclables and the benefits of joining this initiative. Just make sure you place your recyclables CLEAN and SORTED in transparent bags. We are working on some reusable bags that we will distribute to create less trash.
In this center we also process marine debris (plastic that has been in seawater and under the sun), which is not easily recycled, given that this type of plastic does not have the quality to be traditionally recycled. This means that we also receive microplastic and most of the trash you collect during beach clean ups. This is MAJOR news because there is an increasing amount of this plastic washing up on the beach.
We all need to be responsible for the waste we generate and the way we dispose of it. Now that there’s the appropriate infrastructure to recycle, we believe the population will take advantage of this opportunity and clean this beautiful place up and become an example nation and worldwide!
As you know, WATERKEEPER is a non-profit organization so, any surplus funds after covering the center’s operating costs, would be invested in initiatives to keep our water CLEAN!.
