Todos ya sabemos que la calidad del agua de la Quebrada Danta se ha deteriorado visiblemente en los últimos años, no hace falta más que observarla desde el puente para dar cuenta de su evidente contaminación. Con esta preocupación en mente, fuimos el 12 de febrero del 2019 a tomar una muestra del agua del río, la llevamos al laboratorio para medir la cantidad de coliformes fecales que contiene su agua.

Este análisis salió muy afectado, el agua de la Quebrada Danta, la cual vemos todos los días y se encuentra en el puro centro de Santa Teresa, tiene altos contenidos de contaminación fecal.

¿Quién está contaminando la quebrada? Todos las casas y negocios de la zona que no hacen un buen tratamiento de sus aguas. Asimismo, hay una gran cantidad de ríos en Mal País, Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa y Manzanillo que están igualmente afectados por las personas que viven a su alrededor. Esto es un llamado de atención urgente y categórico, si no mejoramos la forma en que tratamos el agua, la contaminación a ríos y mares va a aumentar, afectando a la biodiversidad y a nosotros mismos.

Toda el agua está conectada, los ríos terminan en el mar, al igual que todo lo que contienen, sean peces, plantas o coliformes fecales. Esto afecta nuestra salud y la de nuestras familias porque todos nos bañamos en el mar en un lindo día de playa o nos metemos a surfear y así terminamos nadando en nuestros propios desechos. A su vez, hay un impacto económico, las familias y comercios viven del turismo y si no le dan un buen tratamiento a las aguas que utilizan, están contaminando los recursos naturales que atraen el turismo que es su fuente económica. Este comportamiento no tiene ningún sentido. Esperamos que el resultado alarmante de este análisis nos abra los ojos y tomemos responsabilidad de revisar y corregir nuestros sistemas de tratamiento de aguas.  

We analized Danta River and this is what we found out

It is very clear that the water quality of Quebrada Danta has visibly deteriorated in the past few years, you just have to observe it from the bridge to account for its obvious pollution. With this concern in mind, we went on February 12, 2019 to take a water sample and took it to the laboratory to measure the amount of fecal coliforms.

The results showed a very affected river, the water of the Quebrada Danta, located right in the center of Playa Carmen, has an alarming high number fecal coliform count.

Who is polluting the stream? All the houses and businesses in the area that do not treat their wastewater appropriately. There are other rivers in Malpais, Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa and Manzanillo that are similarly affected by the people who live around them. This is an urgent and categorical wake up call. We need to improve the way in which we treat wastewater if we want to reduce the amount of pollution getting to the rivers and sea.

All the water is connected, the rivers end in the sea, as well as everything they contain, their fish, plants or fecal coliforms. This affects our health and that of our families because we all like to swim in the sea at the beach or go surfing, and we end up swimming in our own waste.

At the same time, there is a strong economic impact. Families and businesses live on tourism, and if they do not treat their wastewater appropriately, they end up polluting the natural resources that attract the tourists and their main income source. This behavior does not make any sense. We really hope that the results of this analysis will open our eyes and encourage all of us to take responsibility of checking and improving our waste water treatment systems.
