// Kenneth Alfaro, Waterkeeper team member, represented our country at World Water Week in Sweden!

Kenneth Alfaro, Waterkeeper team member, represented our country at World Water Week in Sweden!

It is a fact that there are millions of people who still do not have basic access to water and sanitation. There are too many human lives that need their needs to be prioritized by decision makers holding the power. Nature is also suffering the consequences, if we continue to pollute and degrade ecosystems, we will never have an efficient and integrated management of the natural resources we need to survive. These are the conclusions Kenneth Alfaro, Water Pollution Prevention Project Coordinator at the Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, came to after spending a week in Stockholm  surrounded by opinion leaders from around the world at World Water Week (SIWI).

We are very happy and proud of Kenneth’s participation in this very relevant world event. It was also an excellent opportunity to share a unique week with young professionals from around the world, share ideas, and increase knowledge about these global problems that affect us significantly.

Thanks to the Young Professionals Program of the Stockholm International Water Institute, Kenneth traveled to this city together with 4000 other participants from around 130 countries. Under the motto “Water for society: including everyone”, Kenneth presented his ideas in the session “Accountability for the achievement of #SDG6” organized by “Sanitation and Water for All”, where he emphasized the need to create more spaces of dialogue and youth participation.

He also had the opportunity to interview experts from UN Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on water pollution from its source to the sea, an integral vision that we share at Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper. Likewise, Kenneth was interviewed by the Water Supply & Sanitation Collaborative Council and raised the voice of young people from our region, talked about the importance of generating networks and alliances to avoid duplicating efforts and making work and resources more efficient.

It is of great relevance to understand that governments have to be accountable to their citizens in a more participatory and democratic way in order to prevent future conflicts and solve those that already exist. We will incorporate everything Kenneth learned during this enriching week to our Waterkeeper organization and turn it over to the district of Cobano, demanding greater involvement from the authorities, recognizing the resources we have in our community and trying to use them in the best possible way.
