La nueva temporada alta está por empezar en el bello sur de la Península de Nicoya. Todos nos estamos preparando para recibir a miles de turistas que van a llegar a disfrutar de las playas, productos y servicios que ofrece la comunidad. Algunos arreglan los techos de sus hoteles, otros preparan el stock de sus locales y me imagino que muchos están invirtiendo demasiado tiempo y dinero en construir espacios perfectos para su comodidad y la de sus huéspedes. Pero no nos olvidemos, no estamos solos en este paraíso, hay una inmensa flora y fauna que nos rodea, que nos permite vivir sanos y felices y que atrae a los turistas que vienen.
Es importante prepararnos para lo que se viene, arreglar lo que está roto y limpiar lo que está sucio. ¿Pero qué tal si esta temporada nos preparamos de una manera diferente, y muchos dirían, mejor? ¿Por qué no usamos nuestros recursos para convertir el turismo del sur de la península en uno sostenible? Es tarea de todos, del turista y del local, hacer que la comunidad y el medio ambiente en el que habitan se desarrollen de la mano, teninéndose siempre presentes.
Desde Nicoya Península Waterkeeper, te queremos proponer que preparés tu negocio enfocándote en la naturaleza y su biodiversidad. Sabiendo que sin esa biodiversidad no habría turismo, ni tampoco recursos básicos que necesitamos para sobrevivir. A la misma vez, que revisés el stock de tu negocio, considerá utilizar productos realmente biodegradables y dejar de vender plásticos de un solo uso. Si vas a invertir en mejoras, pensá que la mejor inversión hoy en día en este pueblo es tener un tanque séptico y trampas de grasa que funcionen para evitar la contaminación del mar. Si tenés muchas cosas usadas por tirar, separá lo que podés reciclar o lo que podés reutilizar y no desechés tus residuos inconscientemente.
Entendemos, en esta época estamos todos apurados y estresados y tal vez pienses que estos temas no te incumben o que nunca te van a afectar, pero la crisis climática ya no está en discusión y el ser humano es el único responsable. Vos sos responsable. Eso quiere decir, que está en tus manos resolverlo y aportar desde tu lugar.
Queremos con todas nuestras fuerzas poder tener una comunidad que ofrezca a los turistas y al planeta un impacto positivo. No queremos que nuestros restaurantes ensucien los ríos, que nuestra basura inunde las calles. Queremos, mediante el esfuerzo individual de cada uno de nosotros, desarrollar un lugar sano en la tierra.
On your marks, get set, go! A new high season has begun!
The new high season is about to begin in the beautiful South of the Nicoya Peninsula. We are all preparing to receive thousands of tourists who will get to enjoy the beaches, products, and services offered by the community. Some are fixing the roofs of their hotels, others preparing the stock of their premises, and I also imagine they are investing time and money in building perfect spaces for their comfort and that of their guests. But let’s not forget, we are not alone in this paradise, there is an immense flora and fauna that surrounds us, that allows us to live healthy and happy, and that attracts all the tourists that are coming.
It is important to prepare for what is coming, fix what is broken, and clean what is dirty. But what about if this season we prepare in a different way, and many would say, in a better way? Why don’t we use our resources to turn tourism in the Southern peninsula into a sustainable one? It is a common responsibility, tourists, and locals, to develop the community in a way that respects natural resources.
From Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, we want to encourage you to focus on nature and its biodiversity. Knowing that, without that biodiversity, there would be no tourism, nor the very basic resources we need to survive. At the same time that you check your business’s stock, consider using real biodegradable products and stop selling single-use plastics. If you are going to invest in repairs, bear in mind that the best investment today in this town is to have a septic tank and grease traps that actually work and thus, prevent water pollution. If you have many used things ready to be thrown away, separate what you can, recycle or reuse and do not dispose of your waste unconsciously.
We get it, at this time we are all in a hurry and stressed out, and you may think that these issues do not concern you or that they will never affect you, but the climate crisis is no longer under discussion and the human being is solely responsible. You are responsible. That means that it is in your hands to solve it and contribute from where you stand.
We want with all our hearts to have a community that offers tourists and the planet a positive impact, we do not want our restaurants to pollute the rivers, or that our garbage floods the streets. We want that, through the individual effort of each one of us, we’d be able to create a healthy place on earth.
