Día Mundial Limpiezas de Playa

-English below-

Beach Cleanup Day

On Saturday September 18th, three districts of the Nicoya Peninsula (Lepanto, Cobano and Paquera) came together to celebrate the International Beach Cleanup Day. In response to the overwhelming amount of waste that we are witnessing on the beaches, we decided to carry out a clean-up that covers the greatest number of coastal kilometers, in order to have a real and positive impact on the southern Nicoya Peninsula.

We joined forces together with a network of local organizations and the Corredor Biologico Peninsular to take the biggest possible action.

For us, is crucial to focus our work on education and awareness raising. Our consumption habits and the inadequate disposal that we give to our own waste are two determining factors of marine debris. In order to raise awareness, we carry out the beach cleanup in a differentiated way, separating while we collect in three different categories: garbage, microplastics, and recyclables. This truly helped to properly dispose of what we found on the beaches. We dispose of the garbage in containers so that the municipality takes them to a sanitary landfill, we gave the microplastics to Proyecto L-Eco so they can turn them into new materials, and we took the recyclables to the Waterkeeper-Bionic Collection Center to give them a adequate treatment.

508 people dedicated their morning to cleaning up a total of 35 beaches, collecting a sum of 6,045.78 of waste of which 5,324 kg was garbage, 622.53 kg was recyclables and 99.25 kg microplastics.

These efforts are extremely important to reduce the pollution that is already out there in the environment. Those are mitigation initiatives that give a little respite to the coasts of the peninsula, but are not the solution. Ocean currents and heavy rains bring exorbitant amounts of waste to the beaches and the real solution lies in preventing this arrival. We must question how and what we consume, as well as how we dispose of our waste. It is time to remove the blindfold and take concrete and urgent actions.

If you want to do your own beach cleanup, remember the following: collect in a differentiated way, dispose of what you collected properly (do not leave it on the beach), and if you have questions, contact us.
