Antes en Santa Teresa teníamos un sistema de agua donde los hoteles tenían un tanque de almacenamiento que rellenaban. Por no saber la procedencia del agua y no estar garantizada como potable, los tanques muy probablemente estaban contaminados. They walked through cobbled streets, ate exotic dishes, and shared unique moments with local people. After a few days they took another plane back returning to their homes and daily routines.

So then, what happened to those places they visited? Did it stay in the memories of their cell phones only? Did their passage through the destination generate any impact? Can you imagine what would happen if the impact was positive?

150,000 tourists visit the beaches of Santa Teresa each year and they all leave some kind of footprint. From Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper we want to give you a list of things you can do so that when you walk on our beaches your footsteps leave a positive impact:

Reduce the consumption of plastic: To avoid buying plastic water bottles, demand your hotel to provide drinking or filtered water and bring reusable bottles with you. Before, in Santa Teresa, we had a water system where the hotels had a storage tank that they filled. Due to not knowing the origin of the water and not being guaranteed as potable, the tanks were very likely contaminated. Now with the new aqueduct, the water is potable and the hotels can eliminate the use of the storage tank and connect directly to the aqueduct. Find out which system uses the place where you stay so you consume less bottles of water. Another way to reduce plastic is to use cloth bags to go to the supermarket.

Search for sustainable business: in Santa Teresa there are many restaurants that use wooden or metal straws or that don’t even have them at all. There are hotels that have shampoo and conditioner dispensers instead of discarding mini plastic bottles every time they have a new guest. There are supermarkets that sell cloth bags for you to do your shopping. Before getting here, it is important that you get informed about the practices of the places you are going to visit, so you can stay in hotels and eat in restaurants that adopt sustainable practices and treat their waste and water in a correct way.

Refuse activities that imply irresponsible practices with the local flora and fauna: simply say NO to the purchase and sale of articles made out of animals. If you are going to do a tour to Tortuga Island or a whale watching tour, consult beforehand how they do it and make sure that they do it in a way that does not harm flora or fauna. As consumers, we have a strong influence, we just have to demand sustainable practices and the service providers will have to adapt to that demand.

Use products that are friendly to the environment: in Santa Teresa there are stores that sell solid shampoo and conditioner, so you do not use plastic. There is also a company that sells organic sunscreen, so you can surf and bathe without hurting the marine world. In the grocery stores they sell metal straws, cutlery and wooden forks. There are many ways to reduce our environmentally harmful footprint!

Super important: check that your hotel or restaurant makes a good waste-water treatment. One of the biggest problems in town is that it does not have a centralized sewage system, that is, all businesses and houses are forced to have their own water treatment systems. Although it sounds strange, that’s how it is, and it is of vital importance that you stay in a place that meets the requirements of water treatment.

Recycle your waste: did you know that throughout the district of Cóbano we have a collection system for recyclables? and we do it in alliance with Bionic. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, our recyclable truck goes through all the larger communities collecting metal, plastic, glass and tetrabrik from homes and businesses. Almost everything you consume can be recycled now!

Join us in beach clean-ups or do one on your own: once a month we organize a clean-up on one of the beaches in town. Follow us on social media so you know when and where they are. Also, every time you go to the beach you can take your own bag and spend five minutes collecting any garbage you may find. Be sure to dispose of it in the best possible way, you can recycle it in our Recycling Center or dispose it with the municipal waste.

Support local organizations: it is important not to promote a culture of dependence when it comes to traveling and help in an informed way. Sometimes it is better to donate to local organizations that are familiarized with context you are in. Our organization will benefit from your support. 100% of donations and profits are reinvested in our coastal protection programs. Our intention from Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper is to provide options and initiatives that allow locals and tourists to leave a lesser footprint in the environment; as well as to guide the community and its visitors so that they have an active role in the care of the water and assume the responsibility of not destroying the environment we need to live.
