Alvaro Ramirez Hernandez o \u201cel profe\u201d, como todos lo llaman, es docente de la materia Educaci\u00f3n C\u00edvica en el Liceo Rural de Santa Teresa. Trabaja all\u00ed desde abril de 2013 y tiene una mirada un poco diferente -y bastante inspiradora- sobre c\u00f3mo hay que educar
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Educaci\u00f3n C\u00edvica se imparte desde el s\u00e9ptimo grado hasta el und\u00e9cimo y los chicos aprenden sobre seguridad social, derechos de las personas, reg\u00edmenes pol\u00edticos y desastres naturales entre otros temas. Es una materia m\u00e1s pr\u00e1ctica que te\u00f3rica, donde se ganan puntos por proyectos y no tanto por evaluaciones.

Alvaro nunca tuvo en sus planes ser docente, es m\u00e1s, de adolescente no le gust\u00f3 mucho su paso por el colegio y eligi\u00f3 la carrera de educaci\u00f3n porque no ten\u00eda otra opci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, la educaci\u00f3n fue naciendo en \u00e9l y hoy en d\u00eda sus alumnos est\u00e1n muy agradecidos de que hoy lo puedan tener de profe.

Hace dos a\u00f1os una alumna, Ashley de 13 a\u00f1os, le pregunt\u00f3 qu\u00e9 se pod\u00eda hacer con la basura que ella ve\u00eda en la costa y le coment\u00f3 que ten\u00eda ganas de hacer limpiezas de playas mensuales con otros alumnos. El inicio de Proyecto CAM. Lo que hizo \u00c1lvaro no fue organizar el grupo y el proyecto para que los alumnos sigan sus lineamientos, sino que le apunt\u00f3 a Ashley el camino, siempre dando su respaldo pero dejando que ella tomara la iniciativa. Es dif\u00edcil como profesor y como adulto dejar ser a los chicos, no dar \u00f3rdenes y permitir que ellos tomen las riendas de sus propias ideas, pero \u00c1lvaro lo consigui\u00f3. Los alumnos, de la mano del profe, empezaron a hacer limpiezas de playa y r\u00e1pidamente se organizaron formalmente, y as\u00ed naci\u00f3 Proyecto CAM, de la inquietud de los estudiantes a ser protagonistas del cambio.

En la actualidad, Proyecto CAM est\u00e1 conformado por 15 alumnos y realizan limpiezas de playa, reforestaci\u00f3n, proyectos de reciclaje y compostaje y dan charlas a otros alumnos para inspirarlos y as\u00ed expandir el proyecto por todo el pa\u00eds. Tienen apoyo de toda la comunidad y de la Universidad de Costa Rica, con quien hacen talleres de concientizaci\u00f3n. Los estudiantes de Proyecto CAM participan activamente en las actividades de Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, los acompa\u00f1amos tambi\u00e9n en un proyecto de captaci\u00f3n de agua de lluvia que es reutilizada en los sanitarios del Liceo Rural. Tambi\u00e9n, con el apoyo de la presidencia estudiantil del Liceo prohibieron el uso de bolsas pl\u00e1sticas en el establecimiento, todo un ejemplo para la comunidad.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00c1lvaro nos conf\u00eda que, \u201cNo es m\u00e9rito de uno, uno es solo el responsable, pero los que realmente ponen la creatividad en cada uno de los proyectos son los chicos, es una iniciativa joven\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
El acceso a la informaci\u00f3n y a fondos para concretar los proyectos son las dos grandes dificultades a las que se enfrenta el profe d\u00eda a d\u00eda. Construir una biblioteca en el pueblo generar\u00eda un hervidero de conocimientos nuevos y ser\u00eda un valor agregado para toda la comunidad.

En otras instituciones los proyectos estudiantiles vienen ya armados en los programas institucionales, no surgen de la originalidad de los chicos, a diferencia de Proyecto CAM. El profe ambiciona con que el grupo se vuelva una experiencia m\u00e1s formal y estable y que sirva de ejemplo para que otros colegios tomen la iniciativa.

El sistema educativo costarricense, nos explica \u00c1lvaro, es muy protocolar y no deja espacio para otras cosas. Esta monoton\u00eda lo lleva a uno a ser como una m\u00e1quina y eso se vuelve aburrido y completamente frustrante. \u201cArriesg\u00e1ndose un poco, con paciencia y yendo un poco m\u00e1s all\u00e1 los chicos salen contentos del colegio, aprenden valores, a convivir y a ser m\u00e1s humanos\u201d.

Muchas gracias \u00c1lvaro por ense\u00f1arle a los j\u00f3venes a que sus ideas e iniciativas se pueden volver realidad si trabajan por ellas; no necesitan esperar a \u201cser m\u00e1s grandes\u201d para crear proyectos de impacto ambiental. Hoy pueden ser el cambio que su generaci\u00f3n necesita y lo son.

Alvaro Ramirez Hernandez or “el profe”, as everyone calls him, is a teacher of Civic Education at the Liceo Rural of Santa Teresa. He has been working there since April 2013 and has a slightly different – and quite inspiring – look at how to educate.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Civic Education is taught from the seventh grade to the eleventh and the students learn about social security, people’s rights, political regimes and natural disasters, amongst other issues. It is a more practical than theoretical course, where points are earned for projects and not so much for evaluations.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alvaro never had in his plans to be a teacher, as a matter of fact, as a teenager he did not like his time at school and decided to follow the education career because he had no other choice. However, education grew in him and today his students are very grateful to have him as their teacher.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two years ago, a student, 13 year old Ashley, asked what could be done with the trash she saw on the coast and told Alvaro that she wanted to do a monthly beach cleanup with other students. This was the beginning of Proyecto CAM! Alvaro did not organize the group and the project so that the students would follow his guidelines; instead, he just pointed the path to Ashley, always giving her support but letting her take the initiative. It is difficult as a teacher and as an adult to let the kids be, not give them orders and allow them to take responsibility of their own ideas, but Alvaro did it. The students, with the support of their teacher, began with the beach cleanups and quickly organized themselves formally, that is how the CAM Project was born, from the restlessness of the students to be agents of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nowadays, Proyecto CAM is composed by 15 students who carry out beach cleanups, reforestation, recycling and composting projects and give talks to other students to inspire them and thus expand the project throughout the country. They have the support of the community and of the University of Costa Rica, with whom they hold awareness raising workshops. They actively participate in Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper\u2019s activities. Together, we implemented a rainwater catchment system so that rainwater would be used in the toilets at the High School. Also, with the support of the student presidency of the High School, they banned the use of plastic bags in the school, an example for the community.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alvaro confides that, “This is not my achievement, I am only the one responsible, the credit goes to those who create each of the projects, the students, this is a young initiative.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The access to information and funds to finalize the projects are the two great difficulties that he faces every day. Building a library in town would generate a buzz of new knowledge and would be an added value for the entire community.

In other institutions, the student projects are already set in the institutional programs, they do not arise from the originality of the students, like Project CAM. Alvaro wishes the group to become a more formal and stable experience and to serve as an example for other schools to take the initiative.

The Costa Rican education system, he explains, is very protocolar and does not leave space for new things. This monotony leads one to be like an easily bored machine, it is very frustrating. “Risking a little, with patience and going a little further, the students finish school happily, they learn values, to live together and to be more human”.

Thank you very much \u00c1lvaro for teaching young people that their ideas and initiatives can become a reality if they work for them! They do not need to wait to “be bigger” to create environmental impact projects. Today they can be the change that their generation needs! And they are!
