Todos los r\u00edos que nos rodean son sistemas altamente complejos con una gran diversidad de organismos vivos que dependen el uno del otro y cada una de sus partes es relevante para su buena salud. Si este sistema interdependiente es afectado por un elemento externo, puede tener graves consecuencias para el bienestar del medio ambiente y de todos los que lo habitan.

La actividad humana, el crecimiento urbano y su consecuente contaminaci\u00f3n afectan gravemente los recursos h\u00eddricos.<\/strong> Por ello, es importante entender que si no hacemos un buen tratamiento de las aguas que utilizamos a diario para lavar la ropa, ducharnos e ir al ba\u00f1o, estamos generando un gran impacto negativo sobre la salud del agua del r\u00edo y, consecuentemente, sobre el mar donde nos ba\u00f1amos.\u00a0 En abril de este a\u00f1o empezamos a monitorear mensualmente 19 r\u00edos y quebradas de la zona y los resultados son inquietantes: los niveles de ox\u00edgeno disuelto encontrados en los r\u00edos fueron muy bajos y el nivel de fosfato muy alto \u00bfQu\u00e9 significa esto? Que por nuestro pobre tratamiento de aguas y su posterior disposici\u00f3n en los r\u00edos de la zona, estamos matando la vida que se encuentra en ellos. Las aguas grises y jabonosas tienen varios nutrientes, como fosfato o nitr\u00f3geno. Cuando este tipo de contaminantes llega a un r\u00edo, los microorganismos que all\u00ed se encuentran empiezan a consumir toda esa carga org\u00e1nica -que no deber\u00eda estar ah\u00ed en un primer lugar- y este proceso genera que el ox\u00edgeno disminuya. Es decir, si encontramos fosfato alto y ox\u00edgeno disuelto bajo significa que hay materia org\u00e1nica (aguas grises) en ese r\u00edo. Tambi\u00e9n significa que no le permite a ciertos organismos de ese r\u00edo sobrevivir (por el bajo ox\u00edgeno) y la vida acu\u00e1tica disminuye.\u00a0 La Quebrada Danta, en Playa Carmen, es un triste ejemplo de contaminaci\u00f3n humana en nuestra comunidad. Esta quebrada tiene niveles de coliformes fecales extremadamente elevados y sus aguas est\u00e1n clasificadas como \u201cAltamente Contaminadas\u201d. Precisamente estas aguas son las que desembocan en las playas que nos ba\u00f1amos y surfeamos a diario.\u00a0<\/strong> \u00bfRealmente queremos que nuestras acciones diarias destruyan el medio ambiente en el cual vivimos? Tomemos consciencia que cada decisi\u00f3n que tomamos sobre c\u00f3mo desechamos lo que utilizamos, sea agua o residuos, afecta nuestro entorno y ya tenemos evidencia suficiente sobre esto. Estos problemas se pueden revertir si empezamos a tomar acciones para solucionarlo, trampas de grasa, un tanque s\u00e9ptico eficiente o cualquier forma de tratamiento de tus aguas residuales puede hacer una gran diferencia. Human activity, urban growth, and consequent pollution severely affect water resources. <\/strong>Therefore, it is very important to understand that if we do not treat toilet, washing or showering water appropriately, we are negatively impacting the health of the river and consequently, the sea where we bathe. This April, year we began monitoring 19 rivers and streams in the area on a monthly basis and the results are disturbing: the levels of dissolved oxygen found in them were very low and the phosphate levels very high. What does this mean? That as a consequence of human inappropriate water treatment and its subsequent disposition in the rivers of the area, we are killing the life that is in them. Grey and soapy waters have several nutrients, such as phosphate or nitrogen. When these types of pollutants get to a river, the microorganisms begin to consume all that organic load – which should not be there in the first place – and this process causes oxygen to decrease. That is, if we find high phosphate and low dissolved oxygen, it means that there is organic matter (grey water) in that river. With those levels of phosphate and dissolved oxygen, certain organisms are not able to survive in that river (due to low oxygen) and aquatic life decreases. La Quebrada Danta, in Playa Carmen, is a sad example of human contamination in our community. This creek has extremely high levels of fecal coliforms and its waters are classified as “Highly Contaminated.” It is precisely these waters that flow into the beaches where we bathe and surf daily.<\/strong> Do we really want our daily actions to destroy the environment in which we live? Let’s be aware that every decision we make about how we dispose of what we use, be it water or waste, affects our environment, and we already have enough evidence about this. These problems can be reversed if we start taking action to solve it, proper grease traps, an efficient septic tank or any other form of wastewater treatment can make a big difference.
