En esta nota te vamos a contar de qu\u00e9 se trata y por qu\u00e9 es importante mantenerlo bajo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>La turbiedad mide la claridad del agua<\/strong>, es un indicador f\u00edsico que indica que hay diversas sustancias en el r\u00edo. Se presenta en las aguas superficiales principalmente debido a la materia que se desprende de manera natural del suelo y las rocas, un proceso conocido como sedimentaci\u00f3n. Los materiales que hacen que el agua sea vea turbia incluyen la arcilla, limo, materia org\u00e1nica e inorg\u00e1nica muy peque\u00f1a, algas, compuestos org\u00e1nicos coloreados disueltos, plancton y otros organismos microsc\u00f3picos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>El mal uso del suelo es un factor que puede incrementar la turbiedad. <\/strong>La existencia de residuos s\u00f3lidos, construcciones que no admiten l\u00edmites en el uso de concreto u otros materiales, agroqu\u00edmicos u otros pesticidas en los agrocultivos generan un incremento excesivo de erosi\u00f3n, aumentando las part\u00edculas presentes en el agua, as\u00ed generando mayor turbiedad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00bfCu\u00e1l es el problema si hay una mayor turbiedad en el agua? Al haber un exceso de elementos en la superficie del agua, la luz solar no puede pasar. La luz del sol genera vida en el ecosistema marino, si hay elementos que impiden su paso, esto genera una disminuci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno en el h\u00e1bitat y su eventual destrucci\u00f3n.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El nivel de turbiedad en un r\u00edo se determina midiendo la capacidad del agua de transmitir la luz, utilizando un fot\u00f3metro. Seg\u00fan el Reglamento para la Evaluaci\u00f3n y Clasificaci\u00f3n de Cuerpos de Agua Superficial, el nivel de turbiedad ideal en condiciones normales deber\u00e1 ser menos de 25 UNT (unidades nefelom\u00e9tricas de turbiedad) pero es aceptable hasta 300 UNT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante nuestros monitoreos en \u00e9poca seca, los valores de turbiedad se encontraron en un rango aceptable en su mayor\u00eda, mientras que se hall\u00f3 alta turbiedad en los r\u00edos directamente impactados por descargas de aguas residuales y residuos s\u00f3lidos como en las Quebradas Carmen y Quebrada Danta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En \u00e9pocas de lluvia, la turbiedad en los cuerpos de agua aumenta dr\u00e1sticamente de forma natural, ya que las lluvias aumentan las velocidades del agua y los vol\u00famenes de agua son m\u00e1s altos, lo que puede agitar y suspender m\u00e1s f\u00e1cilmente el material del lecho marino, provocando mayor turbidez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A su vez, hemos encontrado que este aumento tambi\u00e9n se debe al arrastre de contaminantes como pl\u00e1sticos y aguas residuales que contienen nutrientes como f\u00f3sforo, nitr\u00f3geno, f\u00e1rmacos y plaguicidas. Este tipo de nutrientes en exceso tienen un impacto negativo en los r\u00edos ya que reducen la cantidad de ox\u00edgeno disponible en el agua y afectan directamente a las comunidades de organismos alterando el balance natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La gravedad de la problem\u00e1tica depende de las sustancias que provoquen la turbiedad, pero sin duda, para el caso de Santa Teresa, en \u00e9pocas de lluvia donde ocurre gran saturaci\u00f3n de suelos, se genera un arrastre mayor de desechos hacia los r\u00edos y el mar con mayor velocidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuestra misi\u00f3n desde Nicoya Pen\u00ednsula Waterkeeper insiste en la conservaci\u00f3n y restauraci\u00f3n de los ecosistemas marinos, esto incluye la protecci\u00f3n de los r\u00edos del sur de la pen\u00ednsula. Para protegerlos primero hay que conocerlos y entenderlos, nuestros monitoreos mensuales nos permiten generar soluciones m\u00e1s eficientes para su pronta restauraci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-huge-font-size\"><strong>&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><strong>Turbidity in Rivers, learn all about it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every month we do water quality monitoring on the 17 rivers in the coastal area which helps us get to know them better and to understand their pollution levels. <strong>Most of the pollutants worldwide are transported by rivers into the ocean, which is why their conservation is crucial. <\/strong>One of the parameters that we monitor monthly is turbidity. In the following article, we will tell you all about it and why it is important to keep it low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Turbidity measures the clarity of water.<\/strong> It is a physical indicator that shows the presence of various substances in the river. It appears naturally in surface waters mainly due to the release of matter from soil and rocks, a process called sedimentation. Material that causes water to be turbid include clay, silt, very tiny inorganic and organic matter, algae, dissolved colored organic compounds, and plankton and other microscopic organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Poor use of the soil is a factor that can increase turbidity.<\/strong> The presence of solid waste, constructions that do not comply with regulations regarding the use of concrete or other materials, agrochemicals or other pesticides in agricultural crops, generate an excessive rise in erosion, increasing the particles present in the water, thus generating greater turbidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the problem if there is turbidity in the water? As there is an excess of elements on the surface of the water, sunlight cannot pass through. Sunlight generates life in the marine and river ecosystems. Elements that prevent its passage generate a decrease in oxygen in the habitat and its further degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The level of turbidity in a river is determined by the ability of the water to transmit light, using a photometer. According to the Regulations for the Evaluation and Classification of Surface Water Bodies, the ideal turbidity level under normal conditions should be less than 25 NUT (nephelometric units of turbidity) but is acceptable up to 300 NUT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During our dry season monitoring, turbidity values \u200b\u200bwere mostly in an acceptable range, while high turbidity was found in rivers that are directly impacted by wastewater discharges, such as Quebradas Carmen and Quebrada Danta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During rainy season, as a natural phenomenon, turbidity in the water increases drastically. Water velocities are faster and water volumes are higher, which can more easily stir up and suspend material from the stream bed, causing higher turbidites. However, we have found that this increase is also due to the carry-over of pollutants such as plastics and wastewater that contain nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, drugs, and pesticides. These excess nutrients have a negative impact on rivers since they reduce the amount of oxygen available in the water and directly affect the communities of organisms, altering the natural balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The severity of the problem depends on the substances that cause turbidity, but undoubtedly in the case of Santa Teresa, rainy season propels wastewater dragging into rivers and the sea with greater speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our mission from Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper insists on the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems, this includes the protection of the rivers of the Southern Peninsula.
