Frente al cierre del botadero y debido a que la recolecci\u00f3n de la basura ha sido tan deficiente, el Comit\u00e9 de Manejo Integral de Residuos S\u00f3lidos (compuesto por Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, Casa Pampa, Reserva Cabo Blanco, Ministerio de Salud, Municipalidad y varios vecinos comprometidos) le pidi\u00f3 una reuni\u00f3n a la Municipalidad para entender la situaci\u00f3n. Nos reunimos con don Roberto Varela de la Municipalidad y esto es lo que nos explic\u00f3.<\/p>\n

1.Cami\u00f3n recolector<\/p>\n

El cami\u00f3n de la Municipalidad est\u00e1 siendo reparado desde hace un mes y estar\u00e1 listo dentro de mes y medio. Por mientras, la Municipalidad de Puntarenas prest\u00f3 un cami\u00f3n pero es m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o, autom\u00e1tico y m\u00e1s lento, as\u00ed que por eso, estas \u00faltimas semanas, el servicio ha sido poco eficiente.<\/p>\n

A partir de esta semana, van a alquilar otro cami\u00f3n de 14 toneladas as\u00ed que la recolecci\u00f3n deber\u00eda normalizarse en estos d\u00edas (iba a comenzar el lunes 26 de junio pero por la huelga, el cami\u00f3n no pudo entrar).<\/p>\n

  1. \u00bfAd\u00f3nde est\u00e1 yendo la basura ahora que el botadero est\u00e1 cerrado?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Desde hace dos meses, se est\u00e1 trabajando con un centro de transferencia provisional. Es decir, el cami\u00f3n llega, descarga en un contenedor e inmediatamente la empresa Tecnoambiente se lo lleva. Esta es una soluci\u00f3n provisional pues el Ministerio de Salud le dio permiso a la Muni para trabajar de esta forma solo 3 meses mientras resuelven el problema; adem\u00e1s cada viaje de Tecnoambiente cuesta 420.000colones as\u00ed que una soluci\u00f3n as\u00ed no es sostenible econ\u00f3micamente.<\/p>\n

    Como soluci\u00f3n m\u00e1s a largo plazo, la Municipalidad solicit\u00f3 a la Contralor\u00eda autorizar un cambio en el contrato de Tecnoambiente para que ellos se encarguen del servicio de recolecci\u00f3n por completo. Es decir, ya no habr\u00eda recolecci\u00f3n municipal sino que Tecnoambiente se encargar\u00eda de todo. Se est\u00e1 en espera de la resoluci\u00f3n de la Contralor\u00eda.<\/p>\n

    1. Precio<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      La Muni est\u00e1 trabajando en una retarificaci\u00f3n. Desde hace cinco a\u00f1os que no se actualizan las tarifas de recolecci\u00f3n de basura, adem\u00e1s que las casas de habitaci\u00f3n pagan lo mismo que un negocio. As\u00ed que se est\u00e1 trabajando en estructurar mejor el sistema de tarifas para que responda mejor a la realidad actual y a los vol\u00famenes de cada uno. Este proceso va a durar m\u00e1s o menos dos meses. Se prev\u00e9 un alza de aproximadamente 3x del costo del servicio.<\/p>\n

      1. Recolecci\u00f3n de basura \u201cno tradicional\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Se va a organizar una recolecci\u00f3n de basura no tradicional despu\u00e9s de las vacaciones escolares de medio a\u00f1o, as\u00ed que aprovechemos esta oportunidad y est\u00e9n atentos a la fecha que pronto ser\u00e1 anunciada con m\u00e1s precisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

        1. \u00bfQu\u00e9 puede hacer usted?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Reciclar.<\/strong> Gato recibe material reciclable. Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper recibe su material reciclable el primer jueves del mes en el Sal\u00f3n Comunal.<\/p>\n

          Compostear <\/strong>sus residuos org\u00e1nicos. Casa Pampa reci\u00e9n lanz\u00f3 el \u201cCompost Club\u201d con el objetivo de ense\u00f1ar a la comunidad c\u00f3mo se pueden compostear sus residuos org\u00e1nicos. Pronto publicar\u00e1n las fechas de las actividades del Compost Club.<\/p>\n

          Reducir. <\/strong>Reduzca su consumo de objetos innecesarios que terminan en la basura. Use menos bolsas pl\u00e1sticas que terminan en la basura despu\u00e9s de 5 minutos, lleve consigo una bolsa reutilizable, cuando pida comida para llevar, lleve su propio contenedor.<\/p>\n

          \u2026*\u2026<\/p>\n

          Given that the dump in Cobano has reached its maximum capacity and has officially been closed and that trash collection has been so inefficient these past months, the Waste Management Committee (composed by Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, Casa Pampa, Reserva Cabo Blanco, Ministry of Health, Municipality, and several committed neighbors) asked for a meeting with the Muni to understand the situation. We met with Roberto Varela from the Muni and he explained as follows.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Trash collection truck<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The Muni\u2019s truck broke down, it has been in the shop for a month now and will continue to be there for another month and a half. In the meantime, the Municipality of Puntarenas lent Cobano a truck. This truck is smaller and automatic, thus slower and inefficient for this area.<\/p>\n

            As of this week, the Muni has rented a bigger truck, so the collection should return to normal. This truck was supposed to start this Monday 26th<\/sup> but the strike didn\u2019t allow the truck to get here.<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Where is the trash going now that the dump is closed?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              A provisional transfer site started working two months ago. This means that when the trash truck gets there, it dumps in a container, and is collected by a company called Tecnoambiente.<\/p>\n

              The Ministry of Health gave permission to work this way for a period of three months until a better solution would be found. \u00a0The cost for each time that Tecnoambiente collects the trash is very high (420.000colones) so it\u2019s not an economically sustainable solution either.<\/p>\n

              As a long-term solution, the Muni asked the National Comptroller\u2019s Office to authorize a change in Teconambiente\u2019s contract so that this company would take over the whole collection system. So, we are waiting to see what the National Comptroller\u2019s Office responds.<\/p>\n

              1. Cost<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                The Muni is working on up-dating trash rates. The rates have not been updated in five years, plus the current rates charge the same price to households and businesses which is not right. So, they are working on restructuring the rates so that they will reflect the current context and individual volumes. This will take approximately two months. A raise of about 3x should be expected.<\/p>\n

                1. \u201cNon traditional\u201d waste collection<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  A non-traditional waste collection will take place after school mid-year vacations, so let\u2019s take advantage of this opportunity. We\u2019ll keep you posted about the date.<\/p>\n

                  1. What can you do?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    Recycle. <\/strong>Gato recieves your recyclables behind Burger Rancho. Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper receives your recyclables the first Thursday of the month at the Salon Comunal.<\/p>\n

                    Compost <\/strong>your organic waste. Casa Pampa recently launched the \u201cCompost Club\u201d to teach the community how to compost your organic waste. They will soon be posting about this month\u2019s activities, so keep posted!<\/p>\n

                    Reduce. <\/strong>Reduce your consumption of unnecessary things that will end up in the trash minutes after. Use tote bags instead of plastic bags. Carry a container for take away, etc<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
