…

Meet Marianne and Rob: a love story that built a successful business

October 24th of 2022: Magic Place got certified by NP Waterkeeper as the third local accommodation in Santa Teresa that achieved the Ocean Friendly Business® certification! You can certainly feel the magic when you arrive at this place: customer service is awesome, the staff is trained in solid waste and wastewater management, and they all understand how important it is to reduce the impact of human activities in nature.

Magic Place has an appropriate water treatment system for the gray and black water they generate. Each one of their four studios has the bins to separate organic waste, recyclables, and trash. They have their own composting bin in the common area where guests happily take their food waste to see how, with time, it becomes organic fertilizer.

Single-use plastics are not an option in this place: they have glass containers for shampoo and detergent and they provide guests with reusable bags for their grocery shopping. There is no doubt that they are a role model for other businesses in town and their success is due to the love story behind the hotel´s creation.

20 years ago, in 2002, Marianne came from Heredia with her beach-life loving family. Her life was divided between Santa Teresa and San José, where she was studying hotel management. When she came back to town, she met a young North American surfer: Rob, who was a wave-searcher nomad at the time.

“Coincidentally“ they both moved to town in 2006 and fell in love, not only with each other, but also with their careers. Marianne managed some important local hotels, while Rob was the main chef at well known restaurants. The couple got married in 2012 and had the idea of building their own business one day.

As they were both very involved with local tourism, they wanted to own an accommodation that could give their guests an unforgettable experience in Santa Teresa. They knew that finding the perfect property to build their dream place wouldn’t be easy, but Marianne was certain that the opportunity would arrive in the ideal time.

One day, a long-time friend called Marianne to tell her she had found a property for sale and she decided to go check it with her. “The place was full of debris, with just two small cabins” said Marianne, but she saw the place´s potential to build their magic place and they decided to buy it. Years of effort and dedication to clean and restore the property went by, as their family grew as well.

When they finally got their construction permits in March of 2020, the pandemic forced them to put their project on hold, resuming the construction process by the end of 2020.

Magic Place opened its doors in March of 2021, with four cozy studios, great either for short or long-term stays. Marianne and Rob have always had the vision of starting small and keep expanding their hotel, reason why being an Ocean Friendly Business® since the beginning is very important for them, so their growth can go accordingly with this beautiful place’s conservation.

“After living here for so long, it’s been 20 years in a town that has changed a lot (…), I realized that if we have a touristic activity that benefits from this town´s natural beauty, the least we can do is look for a way to minimize our impact. I know that as a hotel we always have an impact, but following the Ocean Friendly Business®´ guidelines makes us feel a bit better about the impact we are having in town, helping us reduce the amount of waste we generate as much as we can and make our clients notice it as well.” Marianne affirmed.

The team at NP Waterkeeper wants to thank Marianne and Rob for being an example for the community and congratulates them for materializing their love for nature, their family and this town into a business that is friendly to the most magical thing in this place: the ocean.
