El mal dise\u00f1o y la falta de mantenimiento de los tanques s\u00e9pticos, plantas de tratamiento y trampas de grasa suelen ser algunas de las principales causas de esta contaminaci\u00f3n que, con la llegada de las lluvias, se moviliza a trav\u00e9s del suelo y agua llegando hasta los r\u00edos y el mar. Este escenario est\u00e1 relacionado con la seguridad de las personas que se ba\u00f1an y surfean en la zona ya que las aguas residuales van cargadas de microorganismos que pueden provocar enfermedades como v\u00f3mito, diarrea, virus, etc. Por esto es importante realizar un monitoreo frecuente de los puntos m\u00e1s visitados y que, ya a simple vista, muestran mayores signos de contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #000305; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Durante abril y mayo del 2024 NP Waterkeeper realiz\u00f3 algunos an\u00e1lisis de forma preliminar para conocer mejor el nivel de contaminaci\u00f3n y riesgo a la salud, justo en la transici\u00f3n de estaci\u00f3n seca a estaci\u00f3n lluviosa. Para esto, se tomaron muestras de las tres quebradas que se han observado m\u00e1s contaminadas hist\u00f3ricamente: Danta y Carmen ubicadas en playa Carmen y la quebrada Guardavidas ubicada en playa Santa Teresa, al final de la temporada seca y despu\u00e9s de las primeras lluvias de la temporada lluviosa.<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #000305; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Se aplic\u00f3 el an\u00e1lisis de conteo de bacterias de <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Enterococcus faecalis<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">, que es utilizado a nivel mundial como indicador de contaminaci\u00f3n fecal. La Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud (OMS) establece que en casos donde la cantidad de bacterias presentes en una muestra de agua excede los 110 UFC por cada 100 mL, existe un riesgo de contraer enfermedades gastrointestinales como diarrea, v\u00f3mito, e infecciones. Para conocer mejor el riesgo existente, se analizaron tanto las quebradas como el agua de mar en cada desembocadura.<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #000305; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Los resultados (Cuadro 1) mostraron que existe contaminaci\u00f3n fecal en las tres quebradas estudiadas. Adem\u00e1s, se not\u00f3 un aumento en la cantidad de bacterias al iniciar la estaci\u00f3n lluviosa, probablemente debido al arrastre masivo de la contaminaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s del agua que escurre por el suelo hacia las quebradas y el mar. Los resultados de agua de mar que mostraron un riesgo de contraer enfermedades gastrointestinales para ba\u00f1istas fueron la desembocadura de quebrada Danta en ambas estaciones y la desembocadura de la quebrada Guardavidas durante la estaci\u00f3n lluviosa. La desembocadura de quebrada Carmen en estaci\u00f3n lluviosa se acerc\u00f3 al l\u00edmite de riesgo a la salud.<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #000305; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Cuadro 1. Este estudio muestra apenas una fotograf\u00eda del estado del agua en el momento que se tomaron las muestras. Para poder tener un mejor entendimiento de c\u00f3mo se comporta la contaminaci\u00f3n durante el a\u00f1o, es necesario generar una mayor cantidad de datos de forma m\u00e1s frecuente para conocer a\u00fan mejor el riesgo existente.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #000305; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Por esto, NP Waterkeeper est\u00e1 desarrollando un nuevo proyecto de <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classy.org\/campaign\/water-quality-testing\/c485397\"><u><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Restauraci\u00f3n de Calidad del Agua<\/span><\/u><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">, que permitir\u00e1 obtener resultados de forma r\u00e1pida y frecuente sobre la presencia o no de materia fecal en el agua y si existe o no un riesgo para la salud de los ba\u00f1istas. La contaminaci\u00f3n del agua est\u00e1 en aumento y nos afecta a todos, al ambiente, la salud de la poblaci\u00f3n y la econom\u00eda de una comunidad en su mayor\u00eda tur\u00edstica. Poor design and lack of maintenance of septic tanks, treatment plants, and grease traps are amongst the main causes of this contamination, which, with the arrival of rains, moves through the soil and water, reaching rivers and the sea. This scenario affects the safety of people who swim and surf in the area, as the wastewater carries microorganisms that can cause illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhea, viruses, etc. Therefore, it is important to frequently monitor the most visited points that, already at first glance, already show increasing signs of contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #66c5f3; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">In April and May 2024, NP Waterkeeper conducted some preliminary analyses to better understand the level of contamination and health risks during the transition from the dry season to the rainy season. For this, samples were taken from the three creeks we have observed to be the most contaminated: Danta and Carmen, located at Carmen Beach, and the Guardavidas Creek at Santa Teresa Beach, at the end of this dry season and after the first rains of the rainy season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #66c5f3; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">We applied the Enterococcus faecalis bacteria count analysis, which is used worldwide as an indicator of fecal contamination. To better understand the existing risk, both the creeks and the seawater at each rivermouth were analyzed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #66c5f3; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">The results (Table 1) showed fecal contamination in the three studied creeks. Additionally, an increase in the number of bacteria was observed at the beginning of the rainy season, likely due to the massive runoff of contamination through water that flows from the soil into the creeks and sea. The seawater results indicated a risk of contracting gastrointestinal diseases for swimmers at the rivermouth of the Danta Creek in both seasons and at the rivermouth of the Guardavidas Creek during the rainy season. The rivermouth of Carmen Creek during the rainy season approached the health risk limit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt; color: #66c5f3; line-height: 1.38; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;\">Table 1.
