¿Sos nuevo en el pueblo? ¿Estás buscando organizaciones comunitarias con las que podrías contribuir? Hoy te presentamos a Cabuya Recicla. 

Cabuya Recicla es un comité de mujeres juramentado por la Asociación de Desarrollo de la comunidad. El grupo nació en el 2015 con el fin de unir esfuerzos para limpiar Cabuya e incentivar a sus vecinos a reciclar. 

Doña Xinia Vargas, presidenta del comité, y doña Nia Ledezma, tesorera, nos recibieron en su centro de acopio ubicado detrás del EBAIS de Cabuya. Este lugar fue donado por la Asociación de Desarrollo para el proyecto y fue restaurado por doña Xinia y su esposo, quienes también trabajan en construcción.

Ellas reciben voluntarios de la comunidad y de la Reserva Cabo Blanco y organizan campañas de reciclaje el primer y el tercer domingo de cada mes. En días de campaña abren las puertas de su centro a la comunidad, donde todos pueden llevar sus materiales reciclables. Los materiales que aceptan incluyen botellas plásticas y de vidrio, latas y tetrabrik. No aceptan vidrio quebrado, botellas, espejos, celosías, bombillos, escombros, electrónicos, estereofón, cartón, sillas plásticas, mesas, entre otros tipos de basura convencional.

Todos los martes, el comité separa los materiales reciclables y limpia cualquier residuo no reciclable que se haya dejado. Luego entregan los materiales separados a los chicos del camión del Centro de Reciclaje Waterkeeper-Bionic, con quienes han formado una muy bonita amistad.

Estas mujeres trabajadoras logran equilibrar su trabajo en el comité con sus responsabilidades como cuidadoras, dueñas de pequeños negocios, madres, abuelas, hijas y esposas. Ellas llaman a la comunidad de Cabuya a respetar su lista de materiales y a reducir sus desechos en casa mediante prácticas como el reciclaje y el compostaje.

También necesitan más voluntarios para ayudarles a gestionar la cantidad de materiales reciclables que reciben. Te invitamos a vos como miembro de la comunidad o turista a que vayás a darte la vuelta por Cabuya y apoyés a este grupo con algunas horas de tu día.

Love and determination can move (recycling) mountains: Cabuya Recicla

Are you new in town? Looking for communitary initiatives with which you can contribute? Let us introduce you to Cabuya Recicla. 

Cabuya Recicla is a committee formed by a group of determined women who came up with a solution for the need of a recycling system in their community. It was founded  in 2015 to lead the effort for a clean community, inviting their neighbors to start recycling at home.

Doña Xinia Vargas, president of the committee, and doña Nia Ledezma, treasurer, welcomed us into their small recycling center located behind the EBAIS in downtown Cabuya. The center was donated by the Development Association (ADI) and restored by doña Xinia and her husband, who also work in construction.

The committee welcomes volunteers from the community and the Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve, and organizes recycling campaigns every first and third Sunday of the month. During these campaigns, they open the recycling center´s doors to the community, where everyone can bring their recyclables. The materials they accept include plastic and glass bottles, cans, and tetrabrick. They do not accept broken glass bottles, mirrors, lattice, light bulbs, construction debris, electronics, polystyrene, cardboard, plastic chairs, tables, or any other kind of traditional trash. 

Every Tuesday, the committee separates the recyclable materials and cleans up any non-recyclable waste that has been dropped off. The Waterkeeper-Bionic Recycling Center team collects the recyclables from them in a very nice collaborative communitary relationship. 

These hardworking women juggle their recycling committee duties with their responsibilities as caregivers, small business owners, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and wives. They call on the Cabuya community to please respect the list of materials they accept and to reduce their waste at home through practices such as recycling and composting.

The committee also needs more volunteers to help them manage the amount of recyclable materials they receive. As a community member or a tourist, we invite you to visit beautiful Cabuya,  join them and contribute with some hours of your day.
