Durante el pasado lunes 9 y martes 10 de mayo realizamos el monitoreo de las quebradas de la zona. Este primer monitoreo realizado durante la estación lluviosa nos muestra una realidad sobre el cambio de estaciones y su impacto sobre las quebradas.

¿Qué encontramos?

En el río Arío ya no se encontraba la eutrofización o exceso de algas visto en los monitoreos anteriores, ya que por las fuertes lluvias fueron arrastradas hacia el mar. Además, se observó que todas las quebradas estaban libres de residuos sólidos, a diferencia de los monitoreos anteriores donde siempre se encontraban botellas plásticas, botellas de vidrio, latas de aluminio, bolsas plásticas, etc.  Al igual que en el río Arío, podemos afirmar que estos residuos fueron arrastrados hacia el mar. 

La contaminación con aguas residuales sigue notándose a simple vista en toda la zona, principalmente en las quebradas Carmen y Danta, con la diferencia de que la lluvia moviliza esta contaminación mucho más rápido hacia el mar. Cuando vemos las quebradas limpias durante la época lluviosa, nos indica que toda la contaminación ahora se encuentra en el océano, en un lugar más difícil de limpiar.

Recordatorio

Mantener las playas y ríos limpios es nuestra responsabilidad. Si queremos cambiar el escenario actual de Santa Teresa que está contaminado con caños y ríos de aguas residuales y basura maloliente por todo el pueblo, debemos comenzar por cuestionarnos nuestras conductas y preguntarnos: ¿qué acciones estamos tomando para prevenir y reducir esta contaminación?, ¿cómo estoy tratando mis residuos?, ¿reciclo? ¿composto? ¿le doy un tratamiento adecuado a mis aguas residuales? Analizar nuestros comportamientos es una gran herramienta contra la contaminación y ser ejemplo de buenas prácticas ambientales, sirve para que otros se sumen al cambio.

Como seres humanos, se nos hace más fácil copiar un comportamiento cuando lo vemos en otras personas, se vuelve un efecto en cadena. Otra acción muy importante que podemos hacer es denunciar los casos de contaminación que vemos en la zona, si todos y todas actuamos, seremos muchas personas realizando pequeñas acciones, pero generando grandes cambios y creando en conjunto la comunidad en la que queremos vivir.

First Water Quality Monitoring of the year – Rainy Season Edition

This past 9th and 10th of May, we monitored the streams in the area. This was the first monitoring of the rainy season and the change of seasons and its impact on the streams is evident.

What we found?

We found that the eutrophication or excess of algae seen in previous monitoring was no longer found in the Arío River, since it was washed out to the sea by the heavy rains. We also noticed that all the streams were free of solid waste, unlike previous monitoring where plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, etc. were the norm. As in the Arío river, we can affirm that this waste was dragged towards the sea.

Wastewater pollution continues to be seen throughout the area, mainly in the Carmen and Danta streams, with the difference that the rain moves this pollution much faster towards the sea. When we see clean creeks during the rainy season, it tells us that all the pollution is now in the ocean, in a place that is more difficult to clean.

Keeping the beaches and rivers clean is our responsibility. If we want to change the current scenario of Santa Teresa with its wastewater rivers and smelly garbage across town, we must begin by questioning our behavior and asking ourselves: what actions are we taking to prevent and reduce this pollution? What am I doing with my waste? Do I recycle? Do I compost? Do I give adequate treatment to my wastewater? Analyzing our behavior is a great tool against pollution and being an example of good environmental practices helps others join the change.

As human beings, we find it easier to copy a behavior when we see it in other people, it becomes a domino effect. Another very important action that we can take is to report pollution cases we see in the area. If every single one of us acts, there will be many of us carrying out small actions, but showing great changes and creating together the community in which we want to live.
