The consequences of pollution // La consecuencias de la contaminación

English Below-

On Monday, December 2nd, at approximately 8:40 in the morning, we received several notifications of a restaurant on the main street discharging wastewater inappropriately, directly affecting a public road and a nearby river. We arrived at the place and together with the police, there was soil and river pollution, foul smell, and wastewater discharge coming from the restaurant.

We reported the fact before the local Ministry of Health Office and the Department of Environmental Management of the Municipality of Cobano. As a response to our claim, today we received a copy of the sanitary order closing the restaurant until they correct the current situation and have a wastewater treatment system that complies with the law.

We would like to remind all the businesses in town, like hotels and restaurants, that, as generators of a type of wastewater that falls in the category of special wastewater, they should have a wastewater treatment system that complies with the regulation 39887-S-MINAE regarding wastewater systems.

At Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, we have the resources to accompany and advise every business in town about how to make appropriate management of their wastewater.

It is of the utmost importance to understand that if a business or a house pollutes a body of water, it is under clear violation of the law. This case sets a precedent so that everyone comprehends our individual and collective responsibility regarding the environment, as well as the short, mid and long term value that the watersheds have for our community. We should not let this kind of attribution be ignored.
